Kudzu Control
Kudzu is an invasive nonnative vine
that has destroyed trees and vegetation along the V&E Greenline on a
section called the "Cut," east of McLean Blvd to west of
University St.
In the summer of 2003, the V&E
Greenline Committee employed the eradication methods used to remove
Kudzu in Overton Park to the V&E Greenline. This project is
enormously beneficial to both the V&E Greenline and the owners of
adjacent properties. The picture below shows the original Kudzu; in
other areas is was draped our huge oak trees.

The committee is very grateful to
Fred Hoffer, a volunteer for the V&E Greenline who led the charge against
the Kudzu. Sometimes working with one or two other volunteers, Fred
led the volunteers up the steep banks and sprayed every runner of
Kudzu that could be found. Owners and residents with Kudzu in their
yards were contacted and were ecstatic about having the
volunteers come into their yards to spray. Thank you
Fred. You have
helped the Greenline immeasurably.
A special thanks is also due to Dr.
David Kesler of Rhodes College. Dr. Kesler met with neighborhood
residents to explain the success of this process in Overton Park. He
also discussed the chemical being used to treat the Kudzu.
The heavy spraying is done and the
Kudzu is in retreat. However, some spot treatment will be required
during the summer for the next several years to make sure that the
Kudzu does not reappear.
As far as we know, kudzu
is not located in other sections of the V&E Greenline. There are
many vines, such as grape vines and poison ivy and they are also a
problem, though not as serious as Kudzu. If anyone sees kudzu
in other areas, please notify the V&E Greenline at VEGreenline@VECACDC.ORG
