2006 VECA Margaret Dichtel Award Winner
On January 22, 2007 Jan Kirby received VECA's Margaret
Dichtel Award, presented to a "Vollintine-Evergreen resident
and VECA member who embodies the principles of neighboring and
community action. Jan has been an area resident the past
37 years. She has been on the Greenline board since its
inception, helping to organize
special events such as the bridge and station house dedications;
assists with Greenline cleanups; coordinates the annual yard sale;
among other duties. She frequently walks the Greenline with her husband,
Mike, and dog, Sunny. Jan is pictured with all award winners
for the night.
On the same evening, the chair-person of Greenline Committee,
Renate Rosenthal, was awarded The Martha Heinemann Award,
given to the a "board member who has rendered exceptional service to
either the VECA Board or VECA CDC Board."
Pictured are the nights winners: Renate Rosenthal, Andre
Glenn, Marci Hendrix, and
Jan Kirby.
2004 VECA Margaret Dichtel Award Winner
Craig Jordan and Len Cobb received the prestigious Dichtel
Award at the annual 2004 VECA meeting for their work on the maintenance
of the V&E Greenline.
Len Cobb is often seen on the Cut section of the
V&E Greenline mowing the trail with a commercial lawn
mower. He then heads to the "pie" lot at McLe an
Boulevard to finish the job. He worked closely with an Eagle Scout
project to landscape the lot so the lot could be better maintained. Craig
Jordan is seen on the Springs section of the V&E Greenline,
maintaining and mowing. His work includes leading groups of
volunteers, including the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, in periodic
cleanups of this section. He also worked with the fraternity to
rebuild the retaining wall that has suffered significant erosion.
Previous Greenline Winners of the Margaret Dichtel
Award Winner
Bill Rehberg and Pete & Charlotte Swailes are
previous Dichtel award winners for their work on the V&E
Greenline.
Recognizing Contributors
The V&E Greenline depends upon funds received from a variety of
contributors--users, residents, members of various organizations,
and others. The Contribution Campaign is one of the primary sources
of income for the V&E Greenline. The Greenline could not exist
without this support.
Recognizing the Volunteers
Matt Johnston is mowing the section of the V&E
Greenline between Evergreen Street which is adjacent to his home.
Matt is also a regular on Spruce Up events, prepared a grant
proposal to the City to add crosswalks to the Greenline, and is a
member of the Greenline Committee.
Chris Morton has been mowing the Greenline between
Avalon Street and Stonewall Ave with the tractor. Chris has a
difficult job since he mows the Johnson grass in the drainage ditch,
a precarious job. Chris also takes on many of the difficult jobs on
the Greenline. He sawed up the large log at the entrance to the
V&E Greenline at North Parkway/Watkins. In doing so, he
saved the Greenline $600 in contractors fees.
Hands on Memphis volunteers are regulars at Spruce
Up the Greenline events. A
special thanks to Natalie Jones of Hands on Memphis in helping
create the linkage with Hands on Memphis.
Tom Kirby does the mowing and maintenance
of the Gardens section of the V&E Greenline. He mows every two
weeks using the green Sears riding lawn mower. Betsy Kirby
joins him to pick up debris and trim the trees and Chuck Fox and
Chris and Brian Floyd help
with weed eating. You will find all three of these great volunteers
at Spruce Up the Greenline events.
Kent Overturf can be seen maintaining the Greenline
at the Arbors located adjacent to Auburndale Street. Kent has been
especially active on the entire Greenline, clipping and pulling
vines of the trees. He is a regular at Spruce Up the Greenline
events.
Mike Kennedy has been mowing and weed eating along
Mignon and the Greenline, next to McLean Blvd. His work gives
the area a "cared for" look, while at the same time
preserving the natural area next to the V&E Greenline.
Bradford Sterling has been caring for the terraced
garden at Stonewall Street and the V&E Greenline. He has planted hostas and azaleas, both shade-loving plats; the garden is now a
more attractive entrance to the West End section of the V&E
Greenline.
Len Cobb is responsible for mowing the cut
section, using a commercial lawn mower. Craig Jordan
uses the same mower for his section, the springs.
Our volunteers are happy to share their work duties,
so please email us if you are interested in assisting in any of
these duties.
The Springs Section of the V&E Greenline has
been adopted by the Rhodes College Chapter of Kappa Sigma
Fraternity. An appropriate sign is being designed to recognize this
thoughtful and important contribution.
A picture of the
fraternity members at work and an article about tree planting appeared in the
Commercial Appeal Neighbors section on November 27, 2003.
