The Gardens
The V&E Greenline contains two main garden areas for the enjoyment of those using the trail and for the community.
The Garden at Idlewild
The Garden at Idlewild sits trail side where N. Idlewild ends at Mignon between McLean and Auburndale. Three large raised garden beds include many host or feed plants for pollinators such as butterflies, honey and bumble bees, hummingbirds, moths, and others. Two benches and a Little Free Library are also located here.
The Memorial Shade Garden
The Memorial Shade Garden is located at the foot of Kirby Station on the corner of Avalon and Tutwiler. It includes many native perennials, large oak trees, and a number of our arboretum species. It is also home to the Jan Kirby Memorial sculpture (shown above) by local artist Yvonne Bobo.
Volunteer in the Gardens
Volunteers are needed almost year-round to help care for the garden areas. From watering and weeding to pruning and planting, volunteers do it all! Each garden area is led by a knowledgeable and experienced garden supervisor. Volunteering at either garden is a great way to learn more about gardening, plants, and pollinators. And both gardens are a part of the Experience Memphis Gardens Tour each year.
Email us to learn how to join in at either garden and check the Events page for upcoming opportunities at both gardens.
